The reality of pak us relationship
Introduction
United States of America's diplomatic relationship started with the independence of Pakistan in 1947. America was one of the 1st countries to recognize Pakistan. America worked with Pakistan on a large range of issues like trading and investment, the health department, the energy sector, and the climate crisis, to Afghanistan's stability and attacking terrorism.
History
The relationship started at the time of independence of Pakistan when America recognized Pakistan as a country. Pakistan wanted to have good relations with America as well as the USSR (union of the soviet socialist republic) in the hope that Pakistan could benefit from both superpowers but America did not want Pakistan to favor the soviet union.
In 1950 America invited Pakistan's prime minister Liaquat Ali Khan to visit America. That visit was highly politicized in Pakistan because America wanted to make a CIA base camp in Pakistan to keep an eye on soviet union activity, but the prime minister rejected the request.
During 1950 and 1953 many majors and political persons visited America, in 1954 a mutual defense treaty was signed at which hundreds of Pakistani military began to train in America. A US military assistance advisory group was also established in Rawalpindi and then the capital of Pakistan.
From 1958 to 1971 during the era of the military dictatorship of Ayub Khan and Yahya Khan the relationship was very strong. Ayub Khan was strongly pro-American when he visited America and told that he is there to believe that our army can be yours if we deal. In 1960 Pakistan's large population became pro-America and also held a positive view of the United States. American interest was more with West Pakistan and east pakistan anger toward America for no economic development for them.
Relations began cool in the 1962 war between China and India when America took India's side. General Ayub Khan was unhappy with the decision made by America because Pakistan had good relations with China and the biggest enemy of India. In the 1965 and 1971 war Pakistan was hoping for America's support because the soviet union was supporting India but America did not support it and take a neutral position, Pakistan was seriously disappointed and knew that America will not help us when it needed it. But Pakistan had no choice.
In the era of Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, the relationship with the Soviet Union began well. Bhutto proposed a left-wing theory that had badly upset America. Bhutto wanted to plant an atomic program to become an atomic power country. In 1974 zia-al-haq declared martial law and Bhutto was hanged in case of murder of a political opponent. After the removal and death of Bhutto, the relationship with America improved. America and Pakistan start a multimillion-dollar worth operation to defeat the soviet union in Afghanistan. In the regime of Zia al haq, the ties and relations with America increased fastly. And the United States gives billions of dollars to Pakistan, and in place, Pakistan sends the military to Afghanistan to counter the soviet union.
After Zia al Haq's death deteriorated ties in the democracy of Benazir Bhutto and Nawaz Sharif. The United States took tough decisions in Pakistan's nuclear development. Both Benazir and Nawaz Sharif asked America to stop India's nuclear programming. But America shows no interest, that's why Pakistan had taken a big decision and became a nuclear power in 1990.
The America-Pakistan relationship shows ups and downs but is never stable. America takes interest when abashed. She always used Pakistan according to the situation but not as separately as in the era of Imran Khan.
US-pakistan ties under Imran Khan, the relation assists like turbulent. Distance increased and they came close friends when Imran Khan visited America. In Qatar, Pakistan played an important role to facilitate meetings between America and the Taliban, in that America withdrew from Afghanistan through the 2020 Doha agreement. The relationship distance also increases due to China closing with Pakistan. The trading of China increases all over Asian countries and more in Pakistan. In 2021 the joe biden administration was unhappy for Imran Khan, because imran khan believed that America wants slaves and we are not slaves, if America wants good relations then the only way is equality, don't treat us as slaves. Imran Khan's government was terminated due to straightforward talking. After the termination of Imran Khan's govt, Shehbaz Sharif's ministry comes in 2022. America sends best wishes to the new government and desires to have good relationships.
Conclusion
It is not an easy tactic to conclude the Pak-US relationship. The result which I got after a long research of the history of both countries, America always used Pakistan and Pakistan had no courage to say no. Whenever the Pakistani government took a straight stand, the military opposed and imposed martial law mostly.
